How Long Should You Stay on the Atkins Diet?

Many looking to lose weight find the Atkins Diet to be an attractive way of eating that allows them to restrict their food intake while still enjoying many of the foods they love. You can find much information about the diet online, but many people who haven’t read the Atkins Diet book may wonder how long you should stay on the Atkins Diet. The answer is a bit more complex than you might think.

What most people don’t realize is that the Atkins Diet has several stages to it. You start with the “induction phase”, which helps you get rid of any carbohydrate cravings you may have and forces your body to go into ketosis. Ketosis is when your body starts using its fat for energy instead of carbohydrates, causing you to lose weight. You can see if your body is in ketosis by using unique strips that test your urine.

When most people think about the Atkins Diet, they are only thinking about the induction phase of the diet.

However, you are supposed to move out of it. After spending two weeks on the induction phase, you should move to the ongoing weight loss (OWL) phase. In this phase, you begin to add carbohydrates back into your diet slowly until you reach a point where your body goes out of ketosis. Of course, these should be healthy carbs such as vegetables and whole grains, not doughnuts.

You then go through a pre-maintenance and maintenance phase where you introduce even more healthy carbs to your diet. It is meant for when you have lost all the weight you want to lose and maintain a healthy weight.

Technically, it would be best if you stayed on the Atkins Diet for life. If you were to go back to a standard way of eating, you are likely to regain all of the weight you lost. You need to follow a healthy way of eating for life to stay healthy and slim.

Some people do stay on the induction phase of the Atkins Diet for longer than two weeks. It is a personal preference. These people feel that strictly maintaining their diet helps them to achieve their goals. Others, however, find the induction phase to be a bit restrictive and enjoy incorporating additional carbohydrates into their diet.

The choice is yours. But if you are serious about improving your health, you should realize that you are making a lifelong commitment.

6 Natural Mood Lifters to Combat Depression

Depression, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) or the plain old blues can have you feeling down in the dumps and hopeless. But there is hope, and it’s not in a pill bottle. These easy home remedies can lift your spirits and have you smiling again without the use of medicine. Anytime you feel depressed, give one or all of these six natural mood lifters a try.

Walk it Off

Exercise is the one-size-fits-all cure for just about anything that ails you, including depression. Exercise is as effective as antidepressant medications at relieving mild depression symptoms. How can exercise help lift your mood if you hate it? Glad you asked. Physical activity such as going for a walk causes the brain to release dopamine’s feel-good chemical, which increases the sense of well-being and helps lift the mood.

Take a Nap

Anyone who is sleep deprived is much more likely to feel sad and down in the dumps. Take a nap during the day or go to bed an hour earlier each night to naturally lift your mood.

You are What You Eat

Omega-3 fatty acids help the brains respond to the feel-good chemicals dopamine and serotonin. Cold-water fish like salmon and tuna are loaded with these natural mood-lifting omega-3s. Combine colourful fruits and vegetables and their antioxidants and flavonoid with cold-water fish to help prevent inflammation that can trigger depression.

Light Therapy

Many people feel depressed and anxious during the winter months only, called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). The blue feelings are triggered by a lack of sunlight that helps to keep our internal clock regulated. If our internal clock is off-kilter, it affects our sleep/wake cycle, energy level and mood. Lift your mood natural during the dreary, grey days of winter by exposing yourself to bright light (natural or artificial) for one hour each day. Sit indoors near a sunny window and soak up in direct sunlight; purchase and use a lightbox (designed primarily to treat SAD). Some people who suffer from SAD find their mood improves after visiting a tanning bed for the light therapy benefits.

Meditation

Quiet meditation that focuses on breathing and clearing the mind of negative thoughts is a natural mood lifter. Fifteen minutes a day of alone time to meditate can help banish the blues.

Friendship

Lonely people are more prone to feelings of depression. Cultivate old friendships and become involved in activities to make new friends help banish depression and keep it at bay in the future.

Lose Fat, Not Muscle

In general, it’s easy to watch television programs and fitness magazines and believe what we hear or read because it’s from the media or in printed form. “It must be true” is often the consensus.

Myth: You can achieve more significant weight loss with fat burning supplements. On fat burning products/accessories: Many magazines spend tens of thousands on displaying an ad, often using editorials as the source for publishing information. Of course, with their money on advertising, they will not write anything to upset their readers. So, in reality, the less published newsletters often tend to be better and more accurate sources for advice on fitness than significant magazines, etc.

Truth: Look up information on fitness achieved without the use of supplements. They do very little for weight loss and are a waste of money. The only accessories that have any value for someone looking to fit are protein powders (not bulking shakes, just protein) and gluten. Both help rebuild muscle after workouts. Protein powders can be used as a meal supplement without worrying that they add bulk. (we will discuss proteins later in this article)

Unfortunately, there is no one “cure-all” for everyone. Nor is there any “one workout/diet” that fits all. Everyone’s body and chemistry are different. Yet, there is one factor that will contribute to the weight loss and overall fitness of anyone. Some may have bodies that take longer than others, but even people who can quickly get into shape have to maintain it. Any change in lifestyle for the better will help. Most important is the addition of exercise/activity to your daily routine. If you don’t have time to hit the gym or take a walk for 45 minutes 3-4 times a week, then make sure to get in at least 20 minutes daily of cardiovascular activity. Also important is having some form of weight training. Muscle helps get rid of fat. The more power you have, the easier it will be for your body to improve its metabolism and rid itself of those layers you are trying to lose. If you don’t go to a gym, free weights at home are just fine. There are plenty of exercise programs to look at. Books, online articles, or ask a friend who is a trainer or consultant.

You can also make mild changes to your diet/lifestyle that will make a dramatic difference. You will be surprised! Some examples: Eliminate soda or alcohol from your diet (or both), drink more water each day (half your body weight in oz. – example: you weigh 160, drink 80 oz.), drinking a glass of cold water first thing in the morning can give your metabolism a jump-start. (burns more calories when your body has to heat the water)

There are so many diets/weight loss plans and so much advice, and many times they contradict each other. However, one rule that never changes is you need to burn more calories than you consume to lose weight. It can be done by increasing exercise or changing your diet if you have less time for exercise. Proteins are one of the best fat-burning foods: it takes your body a lot more energy to burn proteins than it does carbs. That’s why Atkins diets work so well at first. Unfortunately, it’s not healthy to stay on all-protein diets because your body needs energy for daily tasks, which is provided by eating carbs. Many who follow this diet long term are dragged out feeling and start to look pale and malnourished.

The best diet to have is protein but includes complex carbs such as vegetables, fruits and whole grains. It, along with some exercise programs with getting you the results you want. It may take longer than you want, but keep yourself motivated (hang a picture of yourself where you will see it every day, have a workout partner, etc.). You will achieve the results you desire.

Does Yohimbe Work?

Yohimbe is a principal component of alternative medicine, especially as a treatment for sexual problems in men. Its active constituent compound, yohimbine, exerts a stimulant effect and increases circulation to the genitals. If you want to use Yohimbe, it’s essential to ask, “Does yohimbe work?”

The answer will depend on why you want to use the product. Yohimbe works well in some ways but does not work in others. Here’s a run-down of the information supporting (and refuting) its supposed medicinal benefits.

What Yohimbe Probably Works For

Yohimbe’s active compound, yohimbine, is an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction, or E.D.

Yohimbe also reduces sexual side effects associated with serotonin-selective reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which are a trendy class of prescription antidepressants. Although these uses are evidence-based, they are not without some degree of risk. Yohimbe can cause serious side effects, particularly if it is misused or used in above-normal doses.

What Yohimbe Might Work For

Several of Yohimbe’s uses have not been sufficiently researched. There is not enough evidence to prove that Yohimbe can treat sexual problems in women, exhaustion, chest pain, complications of diabetes, or depression. It may be detrimental to some people with these conditions. If you are interested in using Yohimbe for these conditions, understand that it is an experimental treatment. There is not enough evidence to prove that it is worth the risks.

What Yohimbe Doesn’t Work For

Yohimbe is not an effective treatment for high blood pressure or hypertension or effective weight loss. Although some practitioners recommend it to people who are obese, there is no evidence suggesting that it works, and its dangers strongly outweigh its benefits. Yohimbe is also ineffective as a treatment for tachycardia and anxiety; it worsens these conditions.

How to Develop a Weekly Fitness Routine

Overweight and Not Healthy

Several years ago, I realized that my weight was getting out of control. I began searching for some way to get enough physical exercise to get healthy. My physician suggested that I try walking. Living on the coast, I decided to find a great place to walk and incorporate my love for the water. I went and checked out a new bridge that was being built over the Indian River Causeway. It had enough of an incline and was exactly ½ a mile in one direction. It became my workout spot. After the first few times, I could walk across without panting from exercise. The minor achievements kept me reaching for the bigger ones.

The Challenge Begins

Each day after work, I would head to the bridge and begin walking at its length. After several weeks, I began to feel the health benefits of having a daily exercise routine. My legs and waist started getting smaller, and I found that walking was not only a great exercise, but my body was getting fit. My energy level was increasing each day. On rainy days, I realized how much my body missed the daily routine. Some days I just had to wait for the storms to pass to get my workouts done.

Pumping Up Endurance

Within a few months, I was jogging from one end of the bridge and walking back across. It allowed me to start progressing more physically with my workout. My endurance got more assertive, and I needed clothes that fit me better. My routine had taken me down four sizes, and I had lost 42 pounds in about six months.

Lifestyle Change Made Successfully

Now, I continue to go and work out; it costs me nothing in fees. There is always a breeze, and I get to enjoy the sunshine daily. It got me excited about working out. Some friends will join me periodically; they have also seen results. Using excuses about time or money will prevent success. I was lacking in motivation and not being proactive with my health. You do not need to spend money to begin getting healthier. Go outside your home and start looking for places where you can create a walking program. We have few choices in life that we can control; this is one of them. Choose to lose and feel better!

Top Reasons Not to Omit Foods when Dieting

Obesity is so prevalent today, and with it comes many different kinds of quick-fix cures for being overweight. You very rarely hear of a diet plan that includes all the primary food groups. Many diets would have people omitting certain foods altogether and citing them as the main reason we are overweight. That is so unhealthy for so many reasons.

Omitting bread, cereals, rice, pasta, and grains is significant in many popular “fad” diets. People do not realize that we need these foods to remain healthy. They are a great source of protein, carbohydrates and are high in fibre. They are full of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. They also have phytochemicals that help protect our bodies from diabetes, certain cancers and heart disease. Grains also help significantly with digestion because they contain high fibre, which means better bowel health and a reduced chance of getting colon cancer.

Many people assume that omitting beef or any meat for that matter is a healthier way to live. The truth is beef is an excellent source of protein, iron, zinc and vitamins B6, B9 and B12. Iron and protein produce the energy we need daily. So it truly is good for us. But what about the fat content?. We already know that a grilled steak has fewer calories than a hamburger. So preparation of any food has to be considered.

Fat is a confusing subject when it comes to having a healthy diet. Again we need fats in our diet to give us energy and absorb vitamins. Saturated fats, Polyunsaturated and Monounsaturated fats help decrease cholesterol levels, while Trans fats lower good cholesterol and raise bad cholesterol.

If we omit certain foods, it negatively affects our health. Moderation is best when trying to maintain good overall health. If you choose to omit something from your diet, make sure you replace whatever vitamin or nutrient you are missing out on.

Tips for Weight Loss

Everyone knows how to lose weight, right? It should be simple, yet for many of us, it isn’t simple at all. We are the culmination of our habits and lifestyle. You might decide one day to go on a diet, and you lose some pounds and then when you get to the weight you want to be, you go off the diet and start eating in your same old unhealthy patterns. Sooner, rather than later, you notice that the pounds are packing back on.

Dieting, as a tool, can help us lose weight, but we need to be consistent. Dieting doesn’t mean sticking to a diet regimen for a month and then reverting to old habits that caused the weight gain in the first place. Let’s look at some lifestyle habits that can ruin your chances of losing weight or maintaining weight loss.

Lifestyle habits not conducive to health and weight loss include:

– Mindless eating
– Eating more than your body needs
– Wanting to feel full
– Eating at your desk
– Eating in front of the TV
– Not paying attention to serving sizes
– Inactivity
– Eating when you aren’t starving
– Comfort eating
– Eating too many calories

Contrary to the above-listed lifestyle habits, we need to do the opposite of what is written there. We are often our own worst enemy when it comes to losing weight. Only you know what your habits are. Mine used to be eating for taste after I had had enough. Each one of those listed lifestyle habits used to be mine. I stopped doing those things, and during the last couple of months, I have lost 32 pounds.

After having gallbladder surgery, I had to change how I eat. I can’t tolerate fried foods or foods that have a significant amount of fat. In the beginning, my portions were small, and now I cut those portions in half and eat the first half of my food and save the other half to eat later when I feel hungry. I’m a gastric bypass recipient, and one side effect that I have is that I feel hungry 2 hours after I have eaten a small meal. So now, I split my meals in half and eat the other half when I am hungry again. I eat more fruit and spread them out throughout the day and early evening when I want something.

A common problem with weight loss efforts is too much snacking on processed foods that are nothing more than empty calories. I always liked to have an ice cream or candy bar now and then. There’s nothing wrong with that; you can fit your snack calories into your eating plan. However, it’s best not to have these types of foods in the house if you can’t control yourself around them. If I want ice cream, I will go out for it. If I want a doughnut, I’ll go out for it. I won’t bring concentrated sweet or fatty foods home. The weight is coming off now without me trying because I have made lifestyle changes that I can live with.

There is no secret to losing weight. We have to find out what works for us. We know from experience what works and what doesn’t because we have tried about everything. Skipping meals doesn’t work very well to lose weight because you are more likely to be so hungry that you eat more than you need when you do finally eat.

To maintain health and be successful with your weight loss efforts, most doctors and healthcare professionals will suggest that you make the necessary lifestyle changes. Lifestyle changes are not just for individuals but whole families. Obesity is often a familial condition when the family members don’t make healthy lifestyle choices.

5 Natural Ways to Cut Carbs

Do you want to cut some carbs out of your present diet? If you do, here are five natural ways to cut carbs without compromising taste or nutrition. And if you have diabetes or are a dieter, these five tips can help you better manage your blood sugars too.

Use Stevia Instead of Sugar or Honey

Make a move from sucrose or table sugar to a Stevia product. One packet is about one carb instead of about 15 carbs in a tablespoon of sugar or honey. Stevia is a natural sweetener, not an artificial sweetener. Here is how I use Stevia to make hot chocolate. It’s as yummy as the higher carb version.

My Low-Carb Hot Cocoa Recipe

Take two packets of Stevia (3 if you like it sweet), one tablespoon of cocoa powder, and 1 cup of unsweetened vanilla or plain WestSoy soymilk. Carbs are 5 per cup, and if you subtract for the fibre, you get about one carb per cup. Using a handheld blender or a shaker cup, mix the ingredients. It froths up into an exquisite beverage, hot or cold.

Up Your Fiber Per Bread Slice

Next, check the nutrition label on the bread you eat regularly. If the fibre grams per slice reads 2 grams or less, you can do better. Select a bread with three or more grams of fibre per slice. Some varieties that meet this amount are the sprouted-grain varieties or Ezekiel bread varieties. These slices of bread also have more protein grams per slice than fluffy white bread. The more fibre and protein the bread slice has in it, the chances are fewer carbs in the portion.

Up Your Protein and Fiber Per Serving

This tip also applies to servings of cereal. The higher the protein and fibre per serving, the lower the carbs per serving, generally. And eating cereal and grains that have had the least amount of processing done to them is one of the best ways to manage blood sugar levels too.

Eat Your Fruit Whole

The serving size of fruit and fruit juice has about the same amount of carbs per serving. Still, a big difference between eating a serving of whole fruit and drinking your fruit is the amount you consume. Since when do you stop at a half-cup serving of juice? It’s a lot more likely you will drink a full cup of juice, and that full cup will be double the carbs. Plus, your blood sugar response will most likely be higher without the benefit of the fibre found in the whole piece of fruit.

Eat Your Vegetables Raw

One final way to cut carbs in your diet is to eat plenty of fresh vegetables along with your carbohydrate foods. The fibre in the raw vegetables helps fill you up, and raw vegetables don’t contribute that many carbs.

Eat enough fibre and protein. Eat your vegetables raw when you can, eat your grains minimally processed, eat your fruit whole, and sweeten with Stevia. Suppose you follow these five tips for cutting carbs naturally. In that case, you are well on your way to reducing carbs in a delicious and nutritious way.

Alternatives for Better Mental Health

Exercising for better mental health is an effective way to keep good daily focus and mental clarity. Some folks would prefer to be off of any medications for mental health. Using exercise as an alternative and a good diet and lifestyle combined will work collectively to create sound mental health. As someone who struggles with anxiety, here are a few other options for better mental health that I regularly implement to steer clear of pharmaceutical drugs.

Forest Bathing

Hiking is a great way to generate better mental focus and decrease brain fog. Through the woods, be aware of all the sights, sounds, and vibes that you can receive from every tree, plant, animal, and insect. After a few miles of this activity, I always walk away in a better frame of mind than I had before the forest bath had begun. I’m never disappointed in the peace I gain from using this activity for better mental health.

Jumping Rope

Rope jumping is a great way to intensely stimulate your entire body, including your brain and neurological system. In circles of folks that rope jump regularly, it is common knowledge that 10 minutes of jumping rope is equivalent to 2 miles of running. Not only that, it gives me great mental clarity once I’ve finished. I find I can concentrate and focus much more manageable and feel more mentally invigorated, generally speaking.

Running

Running will still render good mental focus and a clear mind without as much intensity as jumping rope. I find I have to do it somewhat longer than rope jumping, but I’m never disappointed by the good results I get from it mentally. One benefit of running is the constant change of scenery that accompanies it as you progress through your run. I find that aspect of running alone to be an uplifting one.

Swimming

Aerobically, swimming is a great way to go. You’ll get the aerobic benefit neurologically from it that you do with running or jumping rope, but with an added plus that comes directly from the water. There’s a healing, rejuvenating quality about water that you can’t get from anything else. I find that between the good aerobic workout combined with the water, I can walk away from this exercise feeling refreshed, renewed and ready to take on whatever comes my way.

If you are serious about finding ways to use less medication for your mental health, don’t overlook the benefits of exercise. Not only will it be effective for your mental stability, but it will be a great way to get out, meet people and work towards drug-free mental health. Be sure to find the exercises you enjoy to do them regularly for the best results. Don’t hesitate to contact your health professional before making any changes to your medication or treatment plan.

Conditioning and Exercise: All About Attitudes

When you first start an exercise regimen, the first thing you need to focus on is attitude. With any weight-loss program, attitude is the first and foremost important thing. Being in control of your situation is what you wish for when you begin to exercise. Believing that you can push yourself harder and faster is not starting a good exercise regimen. The idea is that your hard and fast pushing will only lead to a loss of control. The first essential step is controlled.

Some attitudes concerning weight loss are that you can not do it. Most people believe that they will eventually put the weight back on, so why try? It is typical if you are on a crash diet, a massive negative for your bodily system. Maintaining a healthy balanced diet should be the next step after control. Limiting sugars and alcoholic beverages are necessary.
In some cases, eliminating them is an even better idea. The sugars will only provide you with a limited amount of energy. Alcohol is a depressant that naturally slows down your system.

Keeping a journal is a beautiful idea when you begin your conditioning. A daily journal of the things you have consumed and how you have exercised will give you an idea of your progress. Too many times, we forget how much we have eaten or how much we have exercised. The best type of journal can be a simple notebook. Also, along with your journal, provide yourself with some positive rewards. Such as a sticker if you complete your exercising and diet. You will be surprised at how much you will enjoy the little positive rewards!

Try to avoid temptation. The primary way to start a healthy regimen and conditioning program is to have some willpower, which is easier said than done. If your habits are eating a few snacks during the commercial break, then change that with a few leg lifts. Remember that this is not a punishment; this is a way to sculpt that beautiful body that you have. After you have finished your leg lifts, you may then reward yourself with one treat. Remember, willpower is critical even though it is challenging.

And always remember the old saying, “If at first you don’t succeed……” No one is perfect. You will slip up and maybe not do all of your exercises. There is nothing wrong with making some mistakes. Just realize your errors and start again the very next day!

Deceiving the Body into Weight Loss

When you have determined that you will go on a diet, you start dealing with a lot of mixed emotions. You are excited about the prospect of losing weight, and you are determined that you can battle this through. The other thoughts that come to mind are the dread of constantly feeling hungry, that horrid gnawing feeling. Then the other is having to give up your favourite foods.

It’s not only your psychological state that hates this part of the diet. Your body will as well. Your mind knows what you are doing, whereas your body doesn’t. It just gets to the point where it thinks it’s going into a starvation state. The basal metabolic rate will slow itself way down. Unfortunately, this makes the weight loss all the more difficult because it’s not being burned quick enough:

So we know that the body can be tricked into acting in specific ways. Rather than shock it all at once, make the transition slower. After all, it took a while for that fat to build up, so it’s going to take a while to get it off. No matter what though the metabolism has to work to burn the fat:

Start Here:

Plan your ultimate goal. Then determine what type of diet you are going to try. For the first attempt, I would suggest changing eating habits, reducing calories, and exercising. These are the basics of losing weight, and every diet is centred on that. So do this in two stages.

Stage 1:

Change The Eating Habits and Exercise:

Start by replacing the bad foods with the good. Try and do this for one or two of them every 2nd day. Don’t worry about the quantity yet. Then for your exercises, add something to your daily activities that you don’t normally do. Maybe a walk, an extra house chore, or anything that increases your cardio level start the fat burning process. Once you feel that your body has adapted to that exercise, improve it until it starts working again.

Stage 2:

Decrease the quantity of food and increase exercise.

Things To Watch For:

-Don’t turn to the salt shaker. Often when our body starts to crave something, we try and satisfy it with something. It becomes a habit to increase the salt intake. It won’t be a problem if you are aware of it right from the beginning.

-Lots of sleep. When you are changing your lifestyle, your body will react by feeling tired because of the change it is experiencing.

Filler Foods Use With Caution:

Remember we talked about keeping the hunger pangs away so the body wouldn’t feel like it is starving. A small amount of Peanut butter will help: only use enough to take away the craving. Also, try dark chocolate and almonds in tiny quantities and only until your body has adjusted to the calorie reduction.

The Concept of Healing Energy

The concept of healing energy is familiar to most alternative medicines, particularly those with origins in China and India. These methods today are being tried and tested in the west. It means that energy patterns make our body “sick” or “well”. These energy patterns are stored indefinite meridian points (sometimes also called chakras).

To understand this, we have to view the human body as connected with the human psyche. The concept of healing energy maintains that a healthy mentality means a healthy body. They emphasize the body-mind connection as an integral part of healing.

Stored in our chakras (or meridian points) could be traumatic and bad memories. For instance, it is believed that even those traumatic memories buried in our subconscious can be “remembered’ by our bodies, particularly in our chakras where they cause negativity. Negativity is not “good” energy. It thus may cause an imbalance in our chakras or meridian points. Therefore, this imbalance within our chakras may be the leading cause of disease and sickness.

As negative energy can cause an imbalance, positive energy and “good feelings” may cause the chakras to heal. These good feelings are likewise stored in the same meridian points in the human body. They may be emphasized or balance the body energies.

Balancing the body energy can be achieved by being positive, meditating on the good instead of worrying and stressing. Feeling fulfilled because of doing productive work for yourself and others may also be a way to balance your energy patterns. Some believe that even eating the right combination of food tastes can be positive or negative to your meridian balance.

Several alternative healing methods emphasize the concept of healing energy. The EFT (Emotional Freedom technique) believes that tapping these meridian points will help let loose the negative energies detrimental to the balanced flow of the energy patterns. Reiki is a Japanese type of passive “healing energy” that uses the positive healing flow when you lay your hands on an affected area. Reiki is a form of alternative medicine that is passive. While other alternative healings that use laying of the hands claim that they “deplete the energy of the healer”, Reiki uses positive affirmations as one thinks, visualizes and lays the hand of the sick area. Like most Zen-types of healing, Reiki claims that even positive thoughts can heal those who are suffering. Reiki believes that long-distance healing is possible.

There are other healing energy treatments like acupuncture, Ayurveda, crystal healings, massages and the like, but most believe in the same basic premise. There can be no healthy body without a healthy mind. Therefore, the reason (psyche) energy should balance with that of the body. These meridian points store both the positive and negative energies. A healthy attitude, a still uncluttered mind and a “suitable” diet are recommended to help energy healing work and heal those who are diseased.
